Designed under the concept of ‘Graceful Toughness’ the Mazda CX-80 is a three-row SUV with premium presence that expresses richness and elegance, while clearly emphasising the space of its three-row seating layout. Viewed from the front the CX-80’s styling is familiar from the Mazda CX-60, where the imposing face, long nose and Mazda signature grille combine to highlight the front-engine, rear-wheel drive architecture of Mazda’s large-platform SUV models. The eye-catching grille and headlight design instantly identifies the flagship SUV models in Mazda’s range.
Viewed in profile, the CX-80’s unique proportions and 250mm wheelbase increase over the CX-60 allows for an expression of elegance that takes advantage of the length of the nose and cabin to deliver a cohesive imposing design. Entirely surrounding the glazing, the chrome mouldings of the extended side windows are thicker and straighter from the D-Pillar back, emphasising the presence of a third-row of seating. The chrome trim’s shape creates a three-dimensional effect that frames the glass with a surround that looks like it’s been milled from solid metal.
The addition of seamlessly integrated roof rails further reinforces the length of the three-tier cabin. From the rear, the width of the CX-80 is reinforced by the absence of an exhaust garnish, with the tailpipe hidden behind the bumper for a cleaner appearance. The rear lighting signature adopts an L-shaped design to match that of the front lamp clusters. The widely spread consecutive horizontal styling creating a lighting signature appropriate to a premium SUV.
Subtle differences between the model grades distinguish the CX-80 line-up: Exclusive-Line CX-80 models feature a gloss black bar type grille with a chrome signature wing surround and matt black side sill mouldings. Homura and Homura Plus models have body coloured side sill trims and a gloss black honeycomb grille with a dark platted signature wing surround, which complements the black wheels and mirrors that give the Homura models a sporty interpretation of the CX-80’s styling.
To complement the light style cabin, Takumi and Takumi Plus models also have body coloured side sill trims and a gloss black honeycomb grille with a chrome surround. This matches the body-coloured mirrors and grey machined two-tone grey alloy wheels.
Across all models, the CX-80 represents the latest evolution of Mazda’s Kodo Soul of Motion design philosophy that creates greater styling prestige through the elegance and purity of a minimalist Japanese aesthetic which removes all unnecessary elements. Inspired by the purest traditions of Japanese art, the beauty of space between objects and the artistic manipulation of light, the foundation of Mazda elegance relies on the uniquely hands-on approach of the company’s designers and craftsman.
Combining entirely human-centric design and engineering with the dedication and precision that is the hallmark of master craftsmanship, the goal is to produce cars that could only have been Crafted in Japan.
Complementing the CX-80’s styling, the flagship SUV sees the introduction of two new colours to the Mazda range: Artisan Red and Melting Copper. Artisan Red is another example of Mazda’s Takuminuri painting technology and evokes an even deeper refinement of red and is well suited to car with large proportions. Melting Copper is a shade that suggests light sandblasting to the surface of copper that has been melted and hardened again.
In total, the Mazda CX-80 is offered in nine body colours: Jet Black, Deep Crystal Blue, Arctic White, Rhodium White, Platinum Quartz, Soul Red Crystal, Melting Copper, Machine Grey and Artisan Red.
