Prices and Range

The 2018 Mazda2 supermini features a range of 8 five-door hatchback models, priced from £13,595 to £17,395 on-the-road (OTR). The line-up features Mazda’s familiar model structure of SE+, SE-L+, SE-L Nav+, Sport Nav+, and GT Sport Nav+ models. Across the range the Mazda2 sets new standards of infotainment, in-car connectivity and equipment levels.

Engines and Transmissions

The range is powered by Mazda’s 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated SKYACTIV-G petrol engine that is available with three outputs – 75ps, 90ps and 115ps – and either five-speed and six-speed manual transmissions or a six-speed automatic transmission.

Design

Drawing inspiration from the 2014 Mazda Hazumi concept car, the Mazda2 features the company’s award-winning KODO: Soul of Motion design language. The fourth new Mazda model after the Mazda CX-5, Mazda6 and Mazda3 to espouse this inimitable style, the Mazda2 is instantly identified by its muscular, cab-rearward proportions – a corollary of shifting its a-pillars back by 80mm – its signature 'wing' front grille and predatory headlamp styling.

Dimensions

The Mazda2 hatchback posts a length of 4060mm, height of 1495mm, width of 1695mm and sits on a wheelbase of 2570mm, dimensions that make it 140mm longer, 20mm taller, and the same width as its predecessor, the outgoing model, with an 80mm increase in wheelbase, to the benefit of passenger and luggage space.

SKYACTIV-Chassis

The Mazda2 is underpinned by dynamic ultra-stiff SKYACTIV-Chassis architecture that comprises 65 per cent ultra-high tensile steels (a 12 per cent increase), resulting in a 22 per cent boost in torsional rigidity and enhanced impact protection, while posting a seven per cent reduction the weight of the bodyshell.

Engineering

Benefiting from the ultra-stiff SKYACTIV-Chassis, the Mazda2 features a MacPherson strut layout at the front and a compact torsion beam axle ate the rear. The electrically-assisted rack and pinion steering is geared for prompt responses to driver inputs and a tight 4.7m / 4.9m (15-inch tyre / 16-inch tyre) turning circle, while the powerful ventilated front discs and rear drum brakes have been recalibrated for a linear response.

Standard Equipment

Standard equipment levels for the Mazda2 are particularly generous and include the following: air-conditioning, remote central locking, an engine stop-start button, i-stop idle stop/start system, gear-shift indicator, and a four-speaker audio system with USB and AUX connectivity.
