This is Mazda’s first sixth generation vehicle, and its arrival marked a watershed moment for Mazda – the CX-5 embodies both Mazda’s sophisticated SKYACTIV technology and the Japanese company's head-turning KODO Soul of Motion Design direction. The ground-breaking Mazda CX-5 compact crossover features a 16-strong model line-up, competitively priced from £21,895 to £29,895 on the road (OTR).
“The arrival of Mazda’s first vehicle with its innovative SKYACTIV technology transformed the Compact SUV segment in Britain,” comments Peter Allibon, Sales Director, Mazda UK. “SKYACTIV technology runs through every element of the car, and it has allowed Mazda to build a Compact SUV that delivers both excellent CO₂ emissions and outstanding fuel consumption. This is offered without compromising the driving dynamics or price competitiveness, unlike many other brands with eco sub brands or hybrid and electric vehicle alternatives,” says Allibon.
The Mazda CX-5’s significance has not gone unnoticed – it scooped the prestigious ‘Best Crossover’ award in the 2012 Auto Express New Car Awards, and went on to win again at this year’s awards ceremony.
Praising Mazda’s SUV for retaining its crossover crown, Auto Express editor-in-chief, Steve Fowler, commented: “It’s a second win for the brilliant CX-5 at the Auto Express Awards. This is a car that rewrote the rulebooks for crossovers last year with a blend of great looks, useful practicality, loads of technology and low running costs – it’s going to be a tough winner for any other car to beat.”
Mazda’s innovative suite of SKYACTIV technologies centres on three key areas – sophisticated lightweight chassis technology, advanced engines with world-beating compression ratios and highly efficient six-speed manual and automatic transmissions.
The Mazda CX-5 is underpinned by a clean-sheet SKYACTIV-Chassis and SKYACTIV-Body systems that fully integrate lightweight engineering, advanced materials, more efficient structures and advanced production processes to create a lightweight and stiff chassis that not only results in outstanding levels of crashworthiness but also reinforces Mazda’s inimitable agile and athletic driving experience.
Mazda CX-5 drivers have the choice of two engines with three power outputs – the 2.0-litre SKYACTIV-G petrol powerplant with 165ps, or the 2.2-litre SKYACTIV-D turbo diesel unit – expected to account for 85 percent of UK sales – with outputs of 150ps or 175ps.
Featuring class-leading compression ratios, direct injection technology and lightweight alloy construction to deliver both excellent emissions and outstanding combined fuel economy – up to 61.4mpg and 119g/km – and exceptional dynamism, this trio of SKYACTIV engines in the Mazda CX-5 offers motorists excellent performance without comprising on fuel efficiency.
These powerplants are hooked up to Mazda’s two efficient and dynamic six-speed SKYACTIV-MT manual and SKYACTIV-Drive* automatic transmissions. These were designed and developed from scratch to maximise the full potential of the superb SKYACTIV-D and SKYACTIV-G powerplants. In the UK the SKYACTIV-MT manual transmission is expected to account for around 75 percent of sales while the SKYACTIV-Drive* automatic transmissions will total around 25 percent.
The SKYACTIV-Drive automatic transmission is now fitted with a straight-shift gate as found on the all-new Mazda3. This compact and lightweight unit brings together the best attributes of conventional step automatic transmissions, continuously variable transmissions and dual clutch transmissions, to deliver strong fuel economy, a direct and engaging feel, and smooth and quick shifts with prompt responses.
The SKYACTIV-MT has been designed to deliver crisp wrist-flick gear changes, like those enjoyed by Mazda MX-5 drivers. This six-speed manual gearbox was painstakingly developed to deliver the ultimate in shift quality, and its innovative design has resulted in a significant reduction in the number of moving parts, an overall weight reduction of by 3kg and a one percent increase in fuel economy.
The SKYACTIV-MT is fitted with an innovative clutch-restart system as standard - if drivers stall the engine they simply need to depress the clutch within three seconds of stalling and the engine will automatically re-start, without needing to use the engine start/stop button.
All modes are now fitted with a revised suspension layout, which features revised dampers and stabilisers to improve driving dynamics by delivering increased ride comfort and reduced noise, vibration and harshness.
The Mazda CX-5 is available with the choice of 2-wheel drive (2WD) or all-wheel drive** (AWD) models that feature variable torque distribution and precise slip detection, giving a front/rear torque split ranging from 100/0 to 50/50 percent. All three engine variants are fitted with i-Stop, Mazda’s unique fuel-saving idle-stop system.
The Mazda CX-5 is available with the option of five equipment levels – SE-L, SE-L Nav, SE-L Lux, SE-L Lux Nav and Sport Nav. Standard equipment, even on the SE-L, is generous and includes: 17-inch alloy wheels with 225/65 R17 tyres, dual-zone climate control air-conditioning, integrated Bluetooth®, cruise control, 5.8-inch colour touch screen and Mazda’s Multimedia Commander. Opting for the £700 Nav upgrade includes a 5.8-inch TomTom navigation including 3 months free trial of TomTom Live services and 60 days free map upgrade from first use.
Stepping up to the SE-L Lux adds a power tilt and slide sunroof, full leather trim, heated six-way power adjustable front seats, memory function for the driver’s seat, and red detail stitching on the steering wheel, handbrake and gear lever.
Sport Nav models gain additional items of equipment over the SE-L models, including: 19-inch alloy wheels with 225/55 R19 tyres, full leather trim, heated six-way power adjustable front seats, memory function for the driver’s seat, red detail stitching on the steering wheel, handbrake and gear lever, bi-Xenon headlights with adaptive front lighting system, reversing camera and premium Bose® audio system with nine speakers. An optional ‘Safety Pack’ is available on the AWD Sport Nav models. The integrated navigation system in the Mazda CX-5 is powered by TomTom technology, featuring advanced lane guidance and IQ Routes™.
Every Mazda CX-5 is equipped with ‘Smart City Brake Support’ (SCBS), which helps a driver to avoid a low speed (up to 19mph) frontal collision by activating the brakes and reducing the engine output, if the system detects a frontal collision is likely.
The unique appeal of the Mazda CX-5 has been highlighted by What Car? With the top-selling car buyer’s guide naming the 150ps diesel Mazda CX-5 as Britain’s ‘Best Buy’ in the Large SUV under £25,000 category – for the second year in succession.
Declaring the Mazda CX-5 its ‘Best Buy’ once again, What Car? magazine’s special ‘Awards 2014’ issue stated: “A large part of its appeal is down to the 2.2 diesel engine which is spectacular. It keeps emissions down to 119g/km, is one of the most refined units around and pulls strongly throughout the rev range. Practicality is another big plus point with plenty of space for four adults and the large boot has a flat loading lip. There’s also generous equipment and low running costs.”
Industry residual value authority CAP has given the CX-5 an average residual value - depending upon the model, of 43 percent of list price value to be retained at the three years/60,000 mile benchmark.
