Step inside the Mazda6 and you’ll notice an understated sense of luxury, with fine craftsmanship applied to every detail. Highlights across the range include the eight-inch centre display screen and the full colour windscreen projected Active Driving Display. Across the whole range, the instrument panel and door trim designs are aligned to highlight the width of the cabin, while matching the height of the centre and side ventilation louvres enhances the lateral flow of the dash. The side louvers are designed to extend into the door trim, making the instrument panel look wider and heightening the feeling of spaciousness, while decorative front and rear door trim elements run straight along the sides of the cabin, further enhancing the perception of continuity and quality throughout the interior space.
Soft touch cushion structures in the console pads, door trims and armrests add to the sense of comfort, while even the feel of opening and closing the glove box and rear console box lids has been engineered to feel smooth. This focus on material quality and consistency has delivered an enhanced level of comfort and satisfaction throughout the cabin of the Mazda6, regardless of trim level.
Comfort hasn’t been ignored either, the front seats feature supportive materials to combine ideal posture with superior comfort. The seatbacks adopt thick urethane padding to enhance back support and the seat cushions feature high-resilience, high-vibration-absorbing urethane foam that remains soft enough to give under the occupant's weight. The large side bolsters combine with an optimised cushion angle and support spring structure to firmly support the occupant’s pelvic region. The shape of the headrest is designed to enhance its fitted feel. The fore-aft positioning of the headrests and seat cushion angle combine with a centre armrest that is positioned at the same height as the door armrests to further enhance comfort and support. In addition to cupholders, the rear centre armrest features a lidded storage compartment and a pair of USB ports for charging portable devices.
Known for its practicality, the Mazda6 Tourer features a vast load bay that expands from 522 litres with the rear seats in place to 1,644 litres with the split rear seats folded flat. The Tourer’s Karakuri 60:40 split rear seats fold into a flexible cargo area, a simple procedure using either the levers located on each side of the boot or the standard release buttons on the seatbacks themselves. The Mazda6 saloon has a 480-litre luggage space.
As you would expect, infotainment is first-class with an eight-inch centre display positioned on top of the dashboard. In addition, across the whole range the Mazda6 features an Active Driving Display that projects vehicle information directly onto the windscreen in the driver’s eye line. The displayed information is divided into upper and lower zones, with driving environment information shown in the upper section, including turn-by-turn navigation and speed limits. Vehicle status, including current vehicle speed and advanced safety equipment information, is presented in the lower section. The result is quicker and easier reading of important data.
This improved instrumentation is taken a step further on the range-topping GT Sport, which features seven-inch TFT colour dials in place of the conventional gauges found in the rest of the range. They can display a wide range of clear, easy to read vehicle status and multimedia system information, including the speed limit for Mazda Radar Cruise Control (MRCC) as a needle displayed on the speedometer dial.
Sitting at the top of the range, the GT Sport adds to its exclusive nature with a cabin that features unique materials and bespoke colour coordination. Nappa leather seats, real wood trim and suede-finish materials bring a new level of luxury and elegance to the Mazda6. The Nappa leather seats feature a soft touch and rich finish. Satin chrome trim lines sit across the face of the seatbacks at the same height as the decorative elements on the instrument panel and doors. Solid rear seatback panels are also trimmed with satin chrome, and the control panels for the power front seats adopt piano black bezels and chrome-plated switchgear. These combine with the high-quality seat materials to significantly enhance quality within the cabin.
Blending warmth and modernity, the instrument panel and door trim is fabricated in Japanese Sen, a type of wood often used for traditional Japanese furniture and musical instruments, while the ventilation louver bezels are finished in Piano Black. In addition, the instrument panel central pad features Ultrasuede® NU, a material by Toray Industries Inc. The Mazda6 was the first production car in the world to introduce this material, which represents a fusion of the latest industrial technology and traditional Japanese craftwork techniques.
Other premium touches include a steering wheel with unique stitching and a chrome centre bezel, plus a frameless rear view mirror and white LED interior lighting. The high-end equipment tally stretches to front seat ventilation and heated outer rear seats. Whichever model you choose in the Mazda6 range, the interior quality and comfort is clear to see and feel.
